The Navy Reading List

 
The Navy Reading Program posted this picture. The staff at the NEX Southeast Distribution Center in Pensacola are giving Santa's Elves a run for their money. They are now picking and packing the CNO's  Navy Reading List  Books into 1200 kits for 450 Commands around the word. They should "hit the decks" sometime in December. The photo shows one of the"Essential" catogory books: George C. Daughan's "1812:The Navy's War".

It's official, The Navy Reading List for 2012 has been published, and 1812: The Navy's War is at the top of the list. Every few years the CNO publishes this list of essential reading for Navy personel and it is a great honor to have 1812: The Navy's War included. Plattsburgh, N.Y.


On Sunday, September 2, I'll be speaking at the War of 1812 Museum in Plattsburgh, NY, during the Commemorative Weekend sponsored by the Battle of Plattsburgh Association. There are many events over that weekend commemorating the Battle of Plattsburgh (also known as the Battle of Lake Champlain), which occurred on Sept 11, 1814. I hope many of you will attend. My talk will be on Sunday at 6:30.

C SPAN Book TV, Sunday August 19, 2012, 6 PM


Sunday, August 19, 2012 is the 200th anniversary of the historic sea battle between the USS Constitution and HMS Guerriere. In commemoration of this occasion CSPAN Book TV will be re- broadcasting a talk I gave in 2008 about my previous book, If By Sea: The Forging of the American Navy From the Revolution to the War of 1812. The cover of If By Sea depicts the victory of Old Ironsides in this momentous struggle. Both If By Sea and my latest book, 1812:The Navy's War discuss the importance of the encounter in American history. The broadcast will be at 6:00 P.M.

Boothbay (Maine) Book Fair


On Saturday, July 14 I'll be participating in the Boothbay (Maine) Book Fair along with 40 other Maine authors. We will all be greeting and talking with interested folks and signing books that will be made available by Sherman's Bookstore (Boothbay Harbor).The event runs from 11:30 to 3:30 at the Railway Museum on Rt 27 in Boothbay. I will also be speaking and answering questions from 3:00 to 3:30 in the chapel building at the museum. If you happen to be in the area I hope you will stop by to enjoy this literary opportunity.

Monday, June 18 is the 200th anniversary of the signing of the declaration of war and the planned commemorations all over the country will begin and continue until 2015.  I have a busy week planned with 3 talks that are open to the public. Massachusetts Events

An exciting day at the Constitution



I have a couple of very busy weeks coming up. I'm off to Massachusetts again, this time to speak at the Winslow House in Marshfield on Tuesday morning, and then on to Falmouth (Mass) to speak at the historical society Wednesday night. Scarborough, Maine and Charlestown, Mass

I'll be speaking and signing books in Scarborough, Maine this week on Wednesday night (6:30) at the Scarborough Public Library. If you missed the talk at the Portland Library this is another chance for Maine friends to catch the talk about "1812:The Navy's War".

On Thursday night at 7:00 I'll be speaking and signing books at the Charlestown, Mass branch of the Boston Public Library. That's in Charlestown, Mass - home to the Constitution.

A gold medal and more

This has been an exciting week. On Tuesday "1812" was selected as one of the top 20 "Notable Naval Books of 2011" by Proceedings Magaazine. Also on Tuesday "1812" was chosen as the gold medal winner in the U.S. History catagory by the Independent Publisher Book Awards. The medal will be awarded in New York on June 4th. I am honored to have received these 2 important recognitions for "1812:The Navy's War". There have also been several nice reviews published this week in a variety of magazines. The George Pendleton Prize and Florida events

"1812: The Navy's War" has received the 2012 George Pendleton Prize for an outstanding book.The award will be presented at the 2012 SHFG awards luncheon on March 21, 2012. What a great honor to be selected.
The events in the mid-Atlantic last week were very exciting. As you can see from the photo we had a full house at all events and met many wonderful people. Now on to some events in Florida. This week I will be busy speaking in Virginia, Washington, DC and Annapolis, Md.
Monday, Feb 27 I'll be speaking at the Mariners' Museum at 100 Museum Drive, Newport News, Va at 7PM for their evening lecture series.
Thursday, March 1 I'll be at the United States Navy Memorial at noon for their Authors on Deck Series. This talk is in the Presidents Room at the Naval Heritage Center, 701 Pennsylvania Ave N.W. in Washington, DC.
Thursday March 1, at 7 PM I'll be at the Annapolis Maritime Museum, 723 Second St, Annapolis, Md. for their Winter Seminar Series.
All of these programs are open to the public.

The Audies

"1812: The Navy's War" has been selected as a finalist by the Audio Publishers Association for their 2012 Audie Awards competition in the history catagory. "This is the only awards program in the United States devoted entirely to honoring spoken word entertainment. Winners will be announced at the Audies Gala on June 5, 2012, at the New-York Historical society in New York". This competition is known as the "Oscars" of Audio Books. I am honored that "1812" has been nominated for this award.

Portland (Maine) Public Library

On Wednesday, February 22 at noon I'll be speaking at the Brown Bag Lecture Series at the Portland Public Library in Portland, Maine. I'll be speaking and answering your questions about the War of 1812 at the Congress St Location. Many of you have already read the book so come prepared with your questions and your book if you would like to have it autographed. If you haven't read the book yet Longfellow Books will be there with copies to purchase.

On Wednesday, February 15 I'll be speaking at the Portsmouth Athenaeum to launch their 2012 program series "Remembering the War of 1812". The event is at 7PM in the Athenaeum Research Library at 9 Market Square in Portsmouth, N.H. This program is open to the public and is $10.00 for non members of the Athenaeum.
